Chapter from Hell
Hi all,
Been silent for about a month now, so I wanted to take a moment to update you on where things are at with Unity: Project Lancet. I've completed work on a little over 1/4 of the manuscript edit so far. As much as that's possible anyway - I'll probably be tinkering with my stories until I die, even after they're already out there and finished. But that's a topic for another time.
It's been a bit of a slog for the past month. I've been beating my head against a wall - call it writer's block, call it whatever - basically what happened was this: I had a chapter that functions as a critical bridge between before and after; the kind of story point that acts as a bridge between parts.
Only I wrote it early in the process, several years ago, actually, and now that I've got a finished manuscript I'm discovering the direction I was heading in changed a bit as time passed. Ultimately that meant I had to re-envision the whole thing, do an ungodly amount of rewriting, and then cut a whole chunk of it out because it just didn't make any sense.
I mean, I believe in the writing itself - I'll use the parts I cut elsewhere - but in terms of this novel, the bits I was working on didn't really work in light of character development and motivation. It's also been a bit hard to find the energy. Between working full-time and all the usual responsibilities of adult life, I haven't had much left over for creativity. Sometimes I come home and feel wrung out and brain dead. It's not that I have the hardest job in the world - far from it. But once I've been 'on' for eight hours, I come home and want to shut down. Of course everyone has those days, so I won't go all 'woe is me' on you.
Having said that, I've been going through a bit of a reset this past week. Getting my energy back. Now that I've gone through the hard stuff , the next chunk of book should come quickly. Hopefully I'll be able to submit it to agents by the summertime. And hopefully someone will want to pick it up.
If that happens, you shouldn't have too long to wait to read the whole thing.
Although if I'm being hopelessly optimistic, I might as well go on to hope someone will publish it, at which point I'll be showered with critical praise and big piles of cash.
Hah.
Honestly though, my ultimate goal here is to tell a compelling story, and tell it well. For those who know me personally, I've probably mentioned the idea that if I want people to buy/read my content, I'd better make it good. Worth the time and money, so to speak.
Anyway, that's all for now. Thanks for reading!
